I don't really need to say this, but Borat is fuckin' hilarious! I just kept laughing non-stop. Go see this movie while it's still in theatres. My favorite part of the film is when Borat, down on his luck, finds a baptist southern style church where people are speaking in toungs and jerking around. They "bestow" the blessing of Jesus onto Borat and he says "I will forgive Pamela, and I will go to California, with my friend Mr. Jesus, AND WE WILL TAKE HER!!!" Oh man, that was awesome. If you have a myspace, go to www.myspace.com/borat. You can get a taste of awesome right there!
Wednesday, November 1. 2006BOUND @ Club LimeIt's been awhile, I just realized how to write blogs from work (they restricted cookies ... I feel dumb, sorry sean). Anyway, I wanted to give an update on orin's last show at BOUND at Club Lime. Just to let you know, BOUND is a fetish night. You know, latex outfits, "free entry to topless women", spanking stations, electrolosis, stripper pole, the works. It was ... strange ... to go to a place like that since none of us are really into that kind of lifestyle. The theme for the night was religous sects - dress as priests, nuns, and school girls.Check it out for yourself, dc.bound.org. To begin, the whole day started with some major shinanigins (sp?). My car, a jeep cherokee, was supposed to be finished so we could load all our equipment into it and ride on up around noon or one, but that didn't happen. I got to the dealership and the whole damn engine wasn't in it yet. They had the thing for two weeks!!! So we had to change our plans around, and cram all of our equipment into Seans Saturn. I was hesitant, but our friend Kelly (in our top friends on Myspace) was bringing people up in her car, so we could fit J-Hawk's stuff into her car. I should never underestimate the capacity of a Saturn's trunk!! Well one thing led to another, and we finally made it to Sean's Mom's house to do our hair, rest our asses after the three hour drive from Norfolk to Northern Virginia. We tried to use Murray's pomade to make Seans hair into liberty spikes, but we didn't have time. We were already way behind schedule anyway, so it was time for dipmode. In case you needed to know, Club Lime is a hop-skip-and-a-jump from Nation, where buzz and cubic and alchemy used to be. However there was one kooky turn we missed and wound up 10-15 minutes out of the way. We had to call up Carlos, our old guitarist, and he guided us towards our goal. When we pulled up I was amazed at the area. It was by where all the cities busses go when they are off duty, and right next to some kind of industrial plant with huge generators 3 stories high. It was a great setting for an industrial/fetish night. We hauled all our crap up onto the second floor (my CDX is HEAVY!) and started setting up. We were like, two hours late thanks to all the crap that happened that day, so we didn't get to sound check the way everyone would have liked, but the sound guy was very professional and knew what he was doing, and it all worked out pretty well. The club looked great - Todd told me he painted to stage red that day, so we got to pop the places "live cherry" sorta speak. Right before we went on we also got some free drinks for everyone of the people who came out to see us (thanks guys, you know who you are). So all of us, as J-Hawk would say, were pretty well lubricated for our performance. They had us take the stage for a minute set around midnight. There was a decent sized crowd, mostly huddeled around the bar. As we started playing more and more people started coming to the front, getting into our sound. During one of our songs, they actually had a little bondage style performance on stage with us. They had one chick dressed like a school girl in a traditional school house desk/chair combo with other ladies dressed as nun/teachers with rulers. They went to spanking the girl for being "bad", and then threw her in a cage that was right next to my turntable. I had to move it over to make space for 'em ^_^ After we finished people seemed very responsive to our set, and many were asking why we played such a short set and if we would go on again. Todd did say, leave 'em wanting more, and I agree with him - it seemed to work. People were calling their friends during our show trying to get 'em to come out, but by the time they got there our set was done. Everyone was saying they want us to come back, and we would LOVE to, since we had such a kick ass time. Hopefully we'll get their earlier next time since my jeep is finally done. Once our set was done, the real drinking began. I started in on my normal amaretto sours, and the night began to get cooler and cooler. We all mostly hung out in the "stripper pole room" where we watched Becki and Kelly dance on it for a good majority of the night. One of the DJs played my number 1 jam, Born Slippy, so I went a little nuts on the dance floor too. We were supprised the next day to see the massive bruises on Becki and Kelly's legs from the pole - I had no idea stripping was so harsh!! Anyway, I could keep writing but I don't want to. To sum it up, we had a great show, had an awesome time, and met some kick ass people. We hope to do it again sometime. Wednesday, October 4. 2006Welcome J-Hawk!!well everyone - we've had some odd lineup issues in the past year with Carlos moving to northern va and Keith's sorta-kinda-but-not-really joining the band. Also with Dan of derelikt red playing with us for many shows too. Thanks to Dan, but he's got his own band to worry about. Well now we can deffinetly say we are ready to kick ass, a fire is lit under our asses and orin will assemble in ways we never have. Our new guitarist is Josh Hawkins - metal maddness is in full effect!!! His fist performance will be with us this Saturday at buddas in newport news - Sunday, October 1. 2006
What is the fucking point anyway Posted by Sean Gezen

Comments (2) Trackbacks (0) What is the fucking point anywaySo yeah...we got into it tonight. Josh and Becki called me out on some of my shit and I must admit that they were right in doing so. In truth I am a procrastinator. I do tend to put off things I don't want to do and they do pile up. This has caused me to miss a fair share of practices. This is a fact that I am not proud of. I was wrong. I was an asshole. Hell I probably still am wrong and still an asshole. I feel that they put a lot of responsibility on my shoulders and then I let them down. I really don't like to let people down. Especially people I love. But I've tried. Sometimes they schedule things and then tell me when I have to be there. And sometimes I can't make it cause my procrastination has caught up with me. This isn't their fault of course. I really need to grow up and start scheduling my time a little better. They said some stuff tonight that pissed me off though. They basically said that I wasted my time with this site cause no one cared. They said that people only came right after Otakon 2k5. Actually the interesting thing is the traffic we have now is the same as the traffic we had at the end of otakon 2k5. The most traffic we ever had was in January of 2k6. We had a constant stream of traffic. Becki said that she doesn't like posting in the blogs because it is a waste of her time. She also said that no one cared about what she wrote. The interesting thing though is she is wrong. The MOST popular blog on this site is Becki's She has well over 2000 requests for her 8 posts. Most of those are unique. Me on the other hand I have 168 Requests for my 30 some odd blog posts. Our site even outranks our myspace page on both google and yahoo. I don't know...They are right. I just wanted this site to take off. For people to read and get exposed to more of our thoughts and philosophies. Its great that people listen to our music but I think that they could connect with our minds as well. They could laugh with us or at us in the forums. I had a hope that this would mean something in the end. In the wee hours of the many nights that I have worked on this, I thought that something would happen. Its not her fault though. I lost hope. Josh lost hope. Acutally I don't know if there was any hope to begin with. 2 years ago this site was created. The skeleton went up overnight. The next day I was tired. I was cranky. But I was proud that I started this website. In a way I am sad to see where it is now. I can't raise this baby on my own. She needs a couple of fathers and a mother. Unfortunately our family is pretty disfunctional. There is way too much anger. And Hate and of course disappointment. That last bit is my fault of course. But What the fuck is the point anyway. I'm probably just gonna pull the site down anyway. I can't maintain it myself. Tuesday, August 29. 2006Not Hungry
It's really weird. I havn't eaten anything in over 39 hours and I am still not hungry. I went all day yesterday without eating. I am thinking about food though. I was around everyone when they were eating dinner. Josh even made a bowl of chinese food and offered it to me. He waved it under my face and tempted me by saying it was really spicy(I love spicy foods) but even then not a flutter of hunger pangs. I know I should probably eat but I just feel like I don't need to right now. I am forcing myself to drink water cause I know that I NEED water but I don't drink an exhorbitant amount of water. I definitely don't drink enough water to fill me up. Perhaps my appetite will come back later today.

A Dive, A Fest, and A Go Go Bar Posted by Sean Gezen

Comments (2) Trackbacks (0) A Dive, A Fest, and A Go Go BarWell these past 3 weekends have been very busy. We had three shows, each with the band Derelikt Red, in and around the VA Beach/Delaware Area. The first show was at a small dive bar in VA Beach called Hartz. To tell the truth I have never been too impressed by this venue. There is no stage at all. The sound guy they have is almost certifiably braindead. If JB wasn't there to provide the sound he did it would have been horrible. On top of that Becki's mic was turned up so hot that it feedbacked for almost every song. Finally JB came in to save the day and fixed the feedback issue. The second show was the biggest crowd we played for in a while. It was a great setting too. It was up in Delaware at a friend of our's house. The event was the first annual Awesomefest and it was a kickass party. They had BBQ, a moonbounce, and a giant tarp they used for slip'n'sliding. The sound was awesome cause it was provided by JB. It wasn't the loudest setup we had, but it was the best balanced and it was perfect for the crowd. It was a pretty chill environment cause everyone there was friends so we could just shoot the shit and not worry about our set. I even played around with the vocorder a bit in Brand New Colony, I said "Josh is really gay" instead of "everything with change" it was pretty funny cause Zack just busted up laughing at the end of our song. I got pretty badly sunburned(damn my irish skin) but it was worth it for a kickass show. I am definitely looking forward to Awesomefest 2k7. The third show was yesterday at Budda's Place which has an attached GoGo club. First impressions of the place it seemed to be a country biker bar in the middle of nowhere. That impression though was quickly reversed cause as we pulled up we heard industrial music streaming from the club. Josh and I just looked at each other and smiled. We knew it was going to be a kickass day. We went up second after a local punk band named No Brass. There was a second there where it looked as if we weren't going to be able to play. Their snake only had XLR inputs and my synths output to 1/4 in. After about 30 minutes trying to figure out how to hook everything in we were finally off. No Brass stuck around to hear our set(probably cause we were holding their vocal mics hostage) but they seemed to really get into our music. Sometimes I am amazed by the fact that we don't suck. I am usually pretty self-critical, a fact that probably pisses Josh and Becki off a bit. The manager of the place was a guy named Patrick and almost immediately he seemed to be into our set. This came to a head when we played DJ Sammy's Heaven. He also seemed to really enjoy Noir. After the show he wanted our contact info so we went over to the go-go club to give him our myspace info and cell phone numbers and such. This was officially busting Josh's go-go cherry. The first thing that really struck me about this club was the music. It was the same kickass soundtrack as the other place. Mindless self indulgence, Razed in Black, VNV Nation. I mean how many go go clubs are there in the world where you can see dancers dancing to Darkangel. Becki was really funny in there though cause she seemed really enthralled by the dancers. She just kept staring. Patrick bought us all drinks and we hung out with him for most of the day. The other bands were pretty cool too. Bent 9 played soon after us and they played metal infused instrumental tracks. After their show we went to go get some food. And we had the worst customer service experience ever at the local KFC. I won't even go into it but let me just pose a question..."why in the hell does it seem that every chicken based fast food joint has horrible customer service?" So back to Budda's Place we caught Derelikt Red's show which was kickass as always. Josh filmed their performance for their DVD which is coming out around the time of their studio album. Then we saw Devil Joy. They are an industrial band and they were the headliners for last nights show. I really liked the backing parts of their songs but unfortunately the balance was a little off. I wished they turned up the beats and synths more cause the guitar and bass seemed a little overpowering. The backing parts were very cool but it was a little hard to hear. All in all though it was a really good day. Good sounds, good bands, Josh losing his go-go virginity. Oh and I have to definitely say...Gwen is the best dancer there, she got really into the music(it seemed like she really liked industrial music). Josh and I plan on going back to the go-go club on monday...but its not what you think we are dropping off demos for Page and Patrick...yeah...demos. Sunday, June 25. 2006ThoughtsSo I am in Atlanta right now helping out my brother by looking after his dogs while he lays on a beach in St. John. I am pretty freekin bored though. I'm sick of the games on my laptop and games in general right now. I decided to update our forum and blog software today...which I did. So now hopefully there will be alot less blog spam. I was thinking today about setting up a couple of orin podcasts. 1 would be a weekly mix session with me and masamune. The other would be kinda like a reality show featuring Orin. You would see us practicing, writing new music, irritating each other, getting naked, performing live, laughing, crying, and basically just being ourselves. Okay okay maybe not getting naked. Think of the poor poor children who would be subjected to my anus. But the rest of those things I think would be cool. That way we can show what we go through preparing for a gig trying to get a gig and all those things. Hell I think it would be cool to also throw in a live performance here or there. This could actually happen now that I am putting together a new computer for Josh. His old one is all but dead. I am also gonna upgrade my computer, I can't wait. I'm getting a new AMD fx-60 proc with a 2gig FSB, dual core, plus HT. It will be the hotness. It'll take awhile though for this all to happen. We have some footage from Otakon 2k5 and before which we could potentially edit together. The only problem is the quality of the filming isn't the best. Hell for all I know this could be a retarded idea. No one would probably want to watch us but I think it would be cool to do. At least then we can offer something new for our fans to see. It will be higher quality than the "quest for drum triggers" video that I put together. That was shot with a crappy camera and edited with windows movie maker. yeech. Check back here for more updates about this project. Peace out. Friday, June 16. 2006

Were pretty kick ass. I already wrote about the one at the warehouse. Hopefully we'll get a chance to actually PLAY there sometime.
Last weekend (weekend of the 21st) Orin had two performances at VA Wesleyan. The first one was for Relay for Life. Allthough it was awesome to help out a good cause, the show wasn't that great. The sound was a canabalation of the gyms' soundsystem and my little pa as monitors. Basicly it sounded like we added a bunch of echo to our instruments, then added reverb to the output of that. We couldn't hear a damn thing, thus it threw our timing off. Bah! My kingdom for my own PA that works well! Big props/thanks for everyone who came out to see us, regardless of shotty sound, esp. Johnnie from Past Out! The next show was the next day in the other gym at Wesleyan. I was delighted to see Rocky, the local sound guru, and his sound rig. The speakers were massive, the monitors sounded great. This for was for my ole' frat Phi Kappa Taus' Lively in the Ivy. The were alot of the same faces as the night before, however there were quite a few new ones, so to you all I say thanks. Big thanks to the other bands such as Derelikt Red, Polyester, Everyday Circus, and the last band that I can't remember the name of right now. They were all really supportive and encouraging. Mad props to all for a kick ass show! Also, not to mention the party afterwards was awesome! Hooray beer! Thursday, April 20. 2006last weekend ...
So I have to give an update on our show on sat. The place was on Level Green Blvd near Indian River Rd. We drive around, and we can't find the place. I drive up to a strip mall and see five guys who look like they belong in Fall Out Boy (this is not meant as an insult ... they looked very "band like"), so I assume they are one of the bands. I'm like "Yo guys ... uhh ... your in one of the bands right, where the hell is this place?" They point over to a place in the strip mall ... the place is called "Acts 2 Church" - now the "no profanity" rule makes a lot of sense. The irony of this is no one in our band is Christian, and our guitarist, in his own words "lives for blasphemy".
So we had a good chuckle about that, drop off our stuff and go get some food. We decided that KFC/Taco Bell is a good place, and as we pull in there are three churches in this strip mall too! And while we are eating this old dude gives us an "are you saved" card. Well he was a really nice old guy so we were like "oh thank you!" and he went on his merry way. As soon as we get back, our lead singer's voice starts going on the fritz. About an hour before the show she can hardly talk, let alone sing. We go to the store and get some musinex, and she takes three (your only supposed to take 2, and you are not to exceed 4 in 24 hours). So we are trying to figure out what we can do to still perform, I'm trying to learn our lyrics in the 15 minutes before we go on. We all are getting ready to go on, and we find out that the band list has been set an hour and a half back, so we have some more time. Her voice split in a few hours, so maybe it will come back. We are chillin in at the merch tables, and we see this chick we know (she is a friend of Becki (lead singers)'s little brother. She is the emoist of emofied emo girls you have ever seen ever, and she is totally pretending not to know us (she is like, 12 or something). So I start waving and saying "HEY VIVIAN!!!! STOP PRETENDING TO NOT KNOW ME! I KNOW YOU!!!!" But she still ignores me and goes outside with her friends to sneak cigarettes or whatever "cool kids" do these days. About five minutes later this dude pops around the corner and thru the window pretends to have a dragon ball z style beam battle with me - I oblige and have one with him back. Then subsequently he moons me. I am still inside, and though I might not be Christian, I do respect the faith of others, so I can't moon someone while in church, so I go outside to moon this kid back. I need to moon him because I have this sweet tattoo on my ass, so any chance I have to moon someone, I take it. Now while I'm outside, I notice there are allot of people hanging out, and when I turn around to begin moonification this chubby dude says "if you do that I'll fuckin' kick your ass". OK - I'm not afraid of 13 year old over weight kids, so I moon anyway. The chubby dude starts flipping out! He's all like "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?!?! I'LL KILL YOU!" I turn around and say "dude, your 13, I don't care who you are. Maybe if you drink some slim fast and come back, maybe then we'll talk". So his blubber begins to quiver even more, and he walks up to me like he is going to fight me. OK - although I would love to be in a fight, especially one that I didn't start, I wasn't about to get in a fight before my band goes on and get kicked out before we can even play. So I say to him "dude, it's really pathetic to try and pick fights outside of a damn church. I'm going to go inside, and you stay out here and wait for you mom to pick you up, ok?" And I walk back inside, and as I do this he says "WHATEVER HOT TOPIC FAG!!!!!!1 I chuckle to myself seeing that my over shirt was from mens warehouse, and my t-shirt was from banana republic and my pants are from a little boutique in NYC. Then he says "I HAVE THE POWER OF GOD ON MY SIDE!" He really said this. I still can't get over the hypocrisy of that. I go back to my seat inside, and this super short guy (prolly like 5 foot nuthin) pops around the corner and starts flipping me off and making other tough guy expressions like he is going to kick my ass. I just laugh at this. Later I see the pastor on his phone looking at said kids. 5 minutes later a cop car pulls up, and thats the last we see of them. Hahaha ... put I was a little sad because deep inside my heart, I really wanted to fight them. You see, I've been taking martial arts (tang soo do) for two years now, and yet I've never in my life been in a real fight. So it's an inside joke with my friends that I always want to get in a fight, but I'm too nice to ever instigate one. So our new time comes up, and we start to get ready, but Becki's voice is no better, in fact it's worse. The band after us, Coldsun, asks if we can switch time slots because they have a curfew (they are still in high school, I'm graduated from college ... this makes me feel old - in fact the only person in the building older than me is the pastor!!!). I agree, more time=more healing for her voice. However, Coldsun has an hour set, and we have a half hour set. The sound guys said that they have to cut coldsun's time down to a half an hour. Coldsun was pretty bummed out, so I talk to the band and I said "guys, I would rather not play than sound horrible. There arent that many people here, and we do have two shows next weekend. I don't want Becki to totally kill her voice So we gave out time slot to them, and we went home after a very odd day. Wednesday, March 22. 2006

So last nite my gf and i hit up the bodom concert and it ruled!!! it was a great show, tho short, and the crowd was wild. when it was bodom's turn to play, some chick in a wheelchair made her way to the front trying to get all the way up front. then, when the show started she STOOD UP on the wheelchair!!! that was a sight to see, and the first time i saw anything like that happen. it was great, so my gf stood on it too, while i held her from falling. anyways, aside from it being a great show, we waited for bodom after the show to try and meet them. chimaira came out fast and met everyone. they signed autographs and took pictures with ppl, but we weren't interested that much. the show ended at about 11:30pm, and we were outside until 1-something am. that's how long we stood out in the cold waiting, and we were rewarded. we met alexi!!! we got a picture with him and his autograph. i also got roope's autograph and picture. and here they are!!! damn that was a good nite!!

ok, so ever since dir en grey sold out soley thru ticketmaster.com, i've hated the place. not that buying tickets on the site and having to pay $20 extra to hav the tickets sent to me didn't bother me. but i say down with this stupid thing!! or fix it up a bit, and let real physical box offices sell some of their own tickets. anyway, here's a bit of a small payback. neoangelus sent me a link to a venue. it was a ticketmaster link for slipknot sales, but the venue was cancelled (notice the spelling...). so i clicked on the link and checked it out, he didn't realize it, but i did. CANCELLED IS MISPELLED, 2 'L's YOU IDIOTS!!!! horay for their editor on this one... so here's a screen capture of the page, cuz i don't kno how long the page would last for an actual link.

hello all,
we just got back from d.c. yesterday. we went up for katsucon and to visit josh's parents. i had a great time at katsu. i actually got to do a lot, we're usually so busy at otakon that we don't get to really just hang out and enjoy the con. so me, josh, sean, and our fellow forum member sprout spent saturday running around the omni shoreham. we hit up the dealer's room and bought some really cool shit. then we went to the mc chris panel, got some sushi for dinner, came back and watched howl's moving castle, which was pretty cool. i think that was the first time i've actually watched anime at a con, lol. then we stopped by the game room before heading over to mc chris's performance. which was pretty sweet. man, he should be a comedian, he was hilarious. when he said in his panel that he gains his strength from eating babies, i knew he was someone that we would get along with. then we got to meet him after the show. after the show, we went back to josh's parent's house cause i was exhausted. but we were stupid and spent our cab money on a dvd in the dealer's room so we had to walk. and my dumb ass had decided to wear a skirt. well, it was bitch ass cold and my legs were a lovely shade of lobster red by the time we got back. we learned the next day that it was a whole 15 degrees out the night before, with wind chill making it feel like zero. man, we are dumb. especially me for wearing a skirt. but in my defense, it was like 60-70 all week. in other news, while talking to josh's parents we became aware of a little problem. we found out that josh's cousin's wedding is august 5th, which is the saturday during otakon. now, josh can't really ditch his cousin's wedding for otakon so we're trying to work something out. if we do get to perform again it would have to be on friday again. i'm not even sure if we will get to play again tho, i would imagine that they prolly would want to get new acts this year. but we were planning on offering to play again cause we had a blast last year. and it's a pretty great opportunity for a small band like us. so we might try and go friday, fly from baltimore to ny on saturday for the wedding and then fly back to baltimore saturday night. pain in the ass, but we love going to otakon and i'd hate to miss it. even if we don't play. that's about it for now. peace, becki Thursday, February 9. 2006

A few days ago a group of people collected money to send Jack Thompson a message. Along with a shit ton of flowers. They raised over 1000 dollars. They spent about 250 on flowers and shipping and the rest went to a children's charity started by penny arcade. Jack Thompson recieved the flowers and the letter. He made no public comment about its comments...instead he said that the flowers were from take two/rockstar and were sent to harass and belittle him. You can read all about this at Flowers for Jack. Here is the letter sent to jack...unedited and posted in its entirety.
FLOWERS FOR JACK PROJECT [addresses witheld] Alyson L. Burch & George T. Ettinger III TO: John B Thompson [address witheld] Mr. Thompson; Hello, sir. This letter is, to some extent, a letter of apology on behalf of the 'gaming community' for the generally juvenile behavior exhibited to your home and your person as of late. Whether or not we, as a subculture, agree with your opinions, we came together to find that practically none of us condone the immature and unlawful actions taken by so many individuals. Every foolish person who writes threats or makes idiotic calls is, obviously, only proving your point. The problem, as a few of us started to realize, was that idiot individuals were pulling these grossly offensive, spotlight-grabbing stunts and yet the bulk of the community was failing to do anything worthwhile. In essence, that is what has brought this unusual event together. Our underlying issue with these people is that they have likely destroyed any chance we have of opening, much less maintaining, any respectful dialogue with you. We knew we could write a letter, a letter not unlike this one, stating some of our better-worded thoughts without the insults, threats, and exaggerations that others have used. We wanted to find that respectful, civil line of conversation that no forum sorts ever allow. You are frequently a public speaker, we’ve seen the civil and even the lighthearted side of you, and now we appeal to that, in an admittedly unique way. THE FLOWERS That definitely brings us to the flowers. Well… we needed this message to stand out, right? But we didn’t want it to be some juvenile prank like all the rest; we wanted something that would catch your eye but hopefully not offend it. Obviously, we chose this. We wanted something persistent, something obvious, but not something hateful. Needless to say, that means a lot of flowers. Personally, I really hope you accepted them. The donation drive to purchase them afforded us far more than we had originally intended; we asked people to support a cause of civility and maturity, and support it they did. If you don’t want to keep them, we’d be flattered if you donated them elsewhere. A common suggestion was local hospitals, so I thought I should mention it. Sir, we’re lighthearted people. From the eighteen-year-old high school student who’s picking out his college prospects to the 30-something father of two who plays Madden with his son, we’re all bound by a certain fun-loving nature. If we made this letter too stern, too serious, or too ‘mature’ we’d be facetious. We hope this will reflect some level of dignity, or, at the very least, good humor. So… flowers. In a vase, so you don’t get stuck at the door holding them while somebody tries to find some water to put them in. We figured that would be a little more considerate. Honestly, we hope you see it for the absurdity that it is, and as a satire of the behavior we are apologizing for. They’re flowers, sir. Hundreds and hundreds of gamers, from around the world, no less, joined together to send you flowers and support a cause of civility. Ahem, civility and a sense of humor, of course. Like I said, we can’t be so civil that we forget our honest nature. AN APOLOGY To begin, we are sorry, Mr. Thompson, for the unintelligent acts of the decidedly extremist persons of whom we speak. While as a group we can condemn it, our silence as individuals gave the false impression that we condoned it. We do not. Much of our ranks fall within the over-twenty crowd that has better sense than to make juvenile phone calls or psychotic threats. Those people, hereafter referred to as ‘idiots,’ simply do not represent us as a whole. They are not our spokesmen. No, sir, they are idiots. We ask not that their idiocies be forgiven, but that they are not held over the rest of us just yet. We wish to make a statement for ourselves, the majority, without the idiots to get in our way. To summarize this, the entire theme of this message, and what brought the hundreds and hundreds of people from all around the world together to write to you and send you a silly gift… is that even though we disagree with you, we do not approve of the juvenile antics, name-calling, insults, threats, and unfair treatment that is consistently directed at your person, your place of residence, and your lines of communication. STATED AGENDAS Honestly, and without surprise, we really don’t like you, Mr. Thompson. It’s easy to tell we don’t like your opinions. We don’t like your conduct in our forums. We don’t like the way you describe people that many of us respect. We really, really have a problem with what you keep saying about us. Many of us honestly believe that some of your more infamous exclamations have been made out of frustration or in jest. Still, we also know plenty well that those outbursts usually do express your real opinion about us. Rather than quarrel with this, we’ve chosen to stick with what matters to the rest of the country; What is your main agenda, stated clearly? We’ve heard your public statements that “violent and sexually explicit games do not belong in the hands of minors.” Well, they certainly don’t. That statement is true to everyone. Any excessively violent or sexually explicit material should be kept away from children. Even if we disagree on how to achieve this, the motive itself seems agreeable. "I think self-regulation is the first step. Parents ought to take control over their children's lives... If it requires regulation after that, fine, but I don't think government should replace that... And sometimes we rush in to fill the void when it's more appropriate for moms and dads to be, ultimately, the best regulators." – Jeb Bush Regardless of party affiliation, I think that states our viewpoint pretty well. While your stance is consistently reliant on legislation, individual responsibility has always been central to us; adults responsible for themselves, parents responsible for children. Many of us grew up with parents that took an active role in what we were playing and seeing. We are undoubtedly better for it. Now, we are altogether unclear on your position. You have made claims to seek the safety of children, but at the same time have gone to lengths to demand censorship, to insist items be taken from stores and destroyed, never be released, and have gone so far as to make the statement “kiss the video game industry goodbye.” This is contrary to your other statements. This behavior implies a call for censorship, bans, and a general hatred of the very medium of interactive digital entertainment. Obviously these can be exaggerations, as almost none were ever made directly to the press. Most, however, were made to us, so we must ask, where is your final position on the nature of this industry and its future? PIXELANTES It’s no surprise to anyone at this point that we have embraced ‘pixelante’ as a particularly humorous and delightful title. We are well aware this is not what you intended, but it’s worth taking a closer look at. According to most sources, you coined this term in October 2005. A hybrid of “pixel” and “vigilante,” you have given a number of definitions for it since; -“sociopaths with mouses” -“pimple-faced geeks who use death threats to drive people of faith and with values from the public square.” -“…a pejorative term that puts anyone in that category in a category with the KKK and skinheads.” Now, your admitted decision that the word was on par with “cracker,” “skinhead,” and “child molester” is mystifying. Coining what, in that context, is meant to be an ethnic slur and then demanding it be recognized as such is… awkward. By linguistic interpretation, you are the single person in the nation who uses that word as a cultural/ageist slur and its meaning as such is debatable. To understand why we find the word fascinating, we need to take a slightly closer look. The word is a hybrid of an already funny notion, ‘pixel vigilante.’ To our culture, reference to ‘pixels,’ though a literal term in digital displays, immediately conjures to mind memories of Atari-style consoles from the 1980s. Each of these games was full of blocky 4-bit avatars attempting abstract actions towards similarly blocky goals. The instant mental image of a character like Pitfall Harry, a caricature consisting of what must be a dozen colored squares, being a menacing figure to the political arena is… well, it’s really funny. Eliminating the ‘vigil’ aspect of ‘vigilante’ has left it with the ‘ante’ suffix that begs for an accented e. Having removed the most notably Americanized use the that suffix, you have turned it back to its basic roots of Spanish phraseology. ‘Vigilante’ is certainly your intent, but the average mind will turn to ‘picante’ or ‘caliente’ first. That’s pretty funny. The classic rule of ‘comedy K’s’ also seems to apply here. The syllable ‘pix’ alone is a funny sound, but the full-fledged “pixelante” is an inherently funny word. The excess of syllables, unevenly distributed consonants, and the time it takes to speak and read it all keep it from being brief and inflammatory as you intended. Instead, it just sounds funny. These are all subjective aspects of linguistics, however, and the simplest point is overlooked. “Pixelante on, oh confused ones. Your tragic dithering because you have nothing else today helps condemn your entire generation.” – Jack Thompson, November 2005 You defined “pixelantes” as the representatives of this generation. You personally declared us to be a gestalt entity, a complete community under the moniker of Pixelante. You stretched it even further beyond ‘pimple-faced geeks,’ and so much past ‘sociopaths with mouses(sic).’ You declared us to be an entire condemned generation of hopeless Pixelantes. You just gave us a word. “Gamers” is too exclusive towards those who don’t do much gaming, so you personally gave us Pixelante to serve as title to all children of the digital age. You said that Pixelantes are monsters and child molesters and whitebread crackers and deviants and homicidal maniacs and atheists and failures and so forth. You also said that every single one of us is a Pixelante. So, I guess we’re all going to be Pixelantes to you no matter what. May as well enjoy it. THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR MEDIA AND THE FAMILY This issue is a less popularized one, but still a matter we are unclear on. It is widely known that the NIMF distanced themselves from you last year, and that you went on to argue they were a corrupt organization in the pockets of retailers. It’s not necessary to take sides on what happened there, and we’ll leave it alone. However, we would like to know your current opinion and/or relationship with this organization. Even after those incidents, the NIMF upheld its same judgmental standards towards the ESRB. Its ratings and comments were incredibly harsh and met with great criticism, obviously, but the more rational among us begged to question; isn’t their stance towards the ESRB (and the industry in general) along most of the same lines as yours? We know you are not on good terms with Dr. Walsh, but what we are interested to know is your opinion of the actions they have taken since. The NIMF’s position remains rooted in about the same spot, demanding massive industry and ratings reform and possible legislation. Are you not in favor of this? Do you support the actions of the organization despite your opinion of Dr. Walsh, or do you feel he has turned the entire group astray? There are many of us out there who disagree with the NIMF as much as we do with you. We’re simply less vocal about it. To us that puts you on the same side, but time has proved that’s usually not the case. How do you feel about their current state? MINOR QUESTIONS There are obscure rumors circulating that you seek to be a Presidential candidate in 2008 or later. Most of us find these unfounded (and more than a little bizarre,) but we felt it best to ask you. Do you have any immediate or near-future plans for entering into the political arena, state or federal? Again, the subject has passed by a few of us but no concrete evidence has been found. Why did you not debate Attorney Tom Buscaglia? It is believed that you offered to at least once. Is it possible you will in the future? What can we, as a community, do to maintain some kind of non-threatening open forum with you? Are there any people, mediums, or sources we may go through that will receive your earnest attention? If there is, I can assure you it will receive ours. IN CLOSING In all honesty, sir, what began as a small project to accomplish this escalated into much, much more. It would almost be safe to say we accomplished our goals before even having sent this to you. We are the ‘condemned generation’ of ‘pixelantes’ of whom you have spoken. We communicate and entertain through digital means. We are not just children, we are the entire bracket of men and women that live in and understand the digital age. We all play video games. We also do much more. You insult us, berate us, call us names, cover us with blanket statements, and I don’t know why we put up with it. It’s people like us that manage the servers your website operates from. People like us that keep email functioning, that keep nasty viruses out of computers like yours. People like us are doing things as miniscule as serving you food, and people like us are at every go-between step of getting your correspondence from one place to another. Pixelantes are all around you, sir. We range from fourteen to forty, and then some. We can be full-time students. We can have full-time jobs. We can raise families or we can raise buildings. We manage food, money, entertainment, communication, and nothing short of knowledge for everyone around us, including you. We are everywhere, all the time, and you refuse to acknowledge it. This little project was originally intended to band together a few dozen people, hopefully across the country, to buy one nice vase of flowers to send to you alongside this nice letter. We hoped it could come together in a week or so. We have had at least two hundred unique donors and another two hundred signatures of support from around the world, from almost every state, from Canada, all across the United Kingdom, from Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Australia, China, and Japan. We have received names and letters and support from network administrators, store owners, financial consultants, journalists, college students, school teachers, law students, mothers, fathers, athletes, software engineers, architects, nurses, pastors, men and women from each branch of the armed forces, and all sorts of deliverymen. A pixelante may very well have handed you this letter. These are people integral to every function of society. These are people that make it even possible for you to spread your messages of hatred. These men and women, the obvious underpinnings of society all around the world, have heard you constantly comparing them to klan members, child molesters, and murderers. They’ve all heard it. Quite frankly, they don’t appreciate it. It should be easy to relish in this attention. You, sir, have worldwide acclaim. Your name has reached other countries, other continents, and (off the record) seems downright hated in Australia. You’re famous, around the world. Now look at the truth that has assembled behind that. Two nineteen-year-old college students in Flint, Michigan, who have never been on television, have never written a book, and don’t have much in the way of leadership training took a moment to say, “pixelantes, unite.” In two and a half days, the world had rushed in. We hoped for dozens in a week. We had hundreds in days. We hoped for a pretty bouquet, and now you’ve got this. We are all people who can’t stand you, who may not even respect you, but banded together because we wanted to approach you with civility. In calling us monsters, hating us, belittling us to the rest of your generation, you’ve worked towards uniting our own. We are the pixelantes, we are the geek activists, we are the mass that can spawn in a matter of days simply for a cause of decency. We, the two fools who began this, started an accidental movement in two days. We found support in letters, on servers, in people everywhere. Those pixels, the digital lifestyle, our gaming nature… the very internet itself was our means. We, however, are good enough people to use it as a tool for a message, and not as a weapon. We used it as a means to send you a long letter and a lot of pretty flowers, because we’re nice, silly people like that. Imagine what will happen if real leaders take charge among us. Sincerely, George T. Ettinger, III and Alyson L. Burch, Founders Flowers For Jack PS: Because we accidentally overshot our maximum donation goal by over fifty percent, we decided to donate the excess to charity in your name. Thanks for making this possible, Mr. Thompson! Penny Arcade’s Child’s Play Charity appreciates it.
